2018 Provincial Championships & Qualifying Races Announced
– Aquathlon & Aquabike set to make Provincial Championship debuts –
January 2, 2018 – Triathlon Ontario, the recognized Provincial governing body of Multisport in Ontario, announced its complete 2018 schedule for its Provincial Championship races and hosts for National Qualifying races for the 2019 ITU Age Group World Championships.
February 3 – Winterlude Triathlon
Although only its second year as a Provincial Championship, this great event is one of the oldest Winterlude activities and exemplifies what winter in the Nation’s Capital is all about-skating on the Rideau Canal (8km), cross-country skiing (8km) and a 5km run.
February 18 & April 22 – Indoor Series
The indoor race format is simple: swim as many laps as possible in 15 minutes, ride as hard as you can in 15 minutes, and run as many laps around the track as possible in 15 minutes. The farther you go, the more points you score. Race #2 in the series is at McMaster University on February 18 and race #3 is at the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre on April 22.
ITU Qualification Race – Sprint & Standard Duathlon
June 8/9 – Overdrive Race and Relay Series
With a new weather friendly date, this unique duathlon event gives participants the rare opportunity to race on a challenging automotive race track. There will be one qualification spot in each distance per age group, per gender.
June 16/17 – Subaru Triathlon Series Guelph Lake 1
The most popular Provincial Championship rotates back to one of the most popular race weekends in Ontario for 2018. Club members 16 and over will try to score points over the two day event to see who claims the Crystal Cup and divvy’s up Triathlon Ontario’s $2,000 prize purse.
Long Course Triathlon
June 23 – MultiSport Canada Rose City Triathlon
The long course event at Welland will host the Long Course Provincial Championships for the first time. This is a flat and fast course so expect some speedy times!
ITU Qualification Race – Sprint Triathlon
June 24 – MultiSport Canada Rose City Triathlon
The Sprint Distance race at Welland will serve as host to one qualification spot for the Sprint Distance in each age group per gender.
Sprint (non-drafting) & Standard Triathlon Provincials & ITU Qualification Races
July 23 – Toronto Triathlon Festival
The TTF will serve as both Provincial Championships for Sprint (non-drafting) and Standard Triathlon as well as offer four qualification spots in both distances. For those Sprint athletes looking for qualification options, the event is splitting up the spots by offering three spots in the non-drafting race and one spot in the draft legal wave.
Sprint & Standard Duathlon ITU Qualification Race – Standard Triathlon
August 11/12 – MultiSport Canada Bracebridge
Cottage country will be the scene for the Duathlon Provincials and for those looking at a second chance to claim an ITU World Championship spot. There will be one qualification spot per age group per gender in each distance.
Draft Legal Provincial Championships
August 25 – Triathlon Ontario’s Draft Legal Provincial Championships
The fastest triathletes in the province will gather to line up against one another in Welland. The most spectator friendly course in the country will offer fans the chance to see current and future stars of the sport.
ITU Qualification Race – Standard Triathlon
August 25 – MultiSport Canada Wasaga Beach
The Wasaga Beach event will offer Standard Distance triathletes another qualification opportunity this summer with one qualification spot per age group per gender.
Cross Triathlon Provincials & ITU Qualification Race
August 25 – XTERRA Sleeping Giant Cross Triathlon
Thunder Bay will be the first time Provincials host and will also offer two qualification spots per age group per gender.
Aquathlon Provincials & ITU Qualification Race New
September 5 – Stroke & Stride Series Finale
Gulliver’s Lake will be the first time host for this first time Provincial and Qualifier by offering two qualification spots per age group per gender.
Aquabike Provincials & ITU Qualification Race New
September 16 – MultiSport Canada Niagara Falls Barrelman
The fastest growing Ontario event over the past couple of years is serving as host to a new Provincial Championship and ITU Qualifier by offering two qualification spots per age group per gender.
As a reminder, in order to compete for a Provincial title or an ITU qualification spot, athletes must be 2018 Triathlon Ontario members before the event. There are no 2019 ITU Long Course qualification spots in Ontario in 2018 at this time.
