Youth Cup and Provincials ReCap
– Youth Cup and Standard Distance Duathlon Champions Crowned –
September 16, 2014 – This past weekend Multisport Canada’s Lakeside race played host to the 2014 Triathlon Ontario Youth Cup finale, as well as Provincial Championships for the Standard /International Distance Duathlon. Despite cool temperatures over the weekend the action was red hot!
Please note: In order to be eligible to compete in either the Youth Cup or for a Provincial Championship title, athletes must be active Triathlon Ontario members and compete in their proper respective age groups.
Youth Cup
This year’s Youth Cup was an overwhelming success. In just its second year of existence the competition was expanded from four races to five in the 14 & 15 age category, in which three of the five races were draft legal. This year also saw the addition of the 12 & 13 age category, which featured four non-draft legal races. In total 84 youth members competed in the Series, a dramatic increase over 2013 even when subtracting out the new age category. Triathlon Ontario would like to thank all of the race directors, athletes, coaches and parents for making this year’s Series such a success.
Girls 14 & 15
Erika Rankin made it a perfect four out of four by winning her fourth straight race and earning a maximum 105 points in this best four out of five races. Haley Sturrock followed up her second place showing at Provincials with another second place at Lakeside in just her second race of the Series. Rounding out the podium on the day was Emilie Tremblay who finished third. Congratulations to Erika for her overall Series win. Erika’s win added to an already successful season with her silver medal performance at this year’s Ontario Summer Games.
Boys 14 & 15
Liam Donnelly also made it a perfect four out four with his win in Lakeside, earning a perfect 105 points. Will Stewart and Daniel Westbroek came in second and third respectively in Sunday’s finale. Congratulations to Liam for his victory and overall Series win. Liam’s Youth Cup win also capped off a successful season which included a silver medal performance at the Ontario Summer Games this summer.
Girls 12 & 13
Having already locked up her victory by winning the previous three races, Emma Young finished off the season in style by winning her fourth race in the Series in front of her hometown crowd. Emma earned the maximum 75 points in this best three of four race Series. In the overall standings, Isabella Mastroianni relied on three previously strong results to secure second place and Maxine Beland used her third place finish on Sunday to claim third place in the overall standings. Congratulations to Emma for her Series victory.
Boys 12 & 13
In a familiar pattern in this year’s Youth Cup, Tristen Jones made it a perfect three results by winning at Lakeside and earning the maximum 75 points. Second and third place in the overall Series belonged to Liam Yoell and Matthew Cottam respectively. Congratulations to Tristen for his fine performance and Series victory.

Provincial Championships
Saturday was the day for the next to last Triathlon Ontario Provincial Championship. The provinces best duathletes took centre stage in Lakeside to do battle for the title and a chance to represent Canada at next year’s World Championships in Adelaide, Australia.
On the men’s side, Kintore’s Scott Finch used a 38:13 first run leg (10km) to build an early lead over the rest of the field and then followed that up with the day’s second fastest bike split with a time of 1:03:43 for the 40km course. Finch’s lead was insurmountable as he held on for the final 5.1km run leg to take the victory and the title.
London’s Christine Richardson was the second woman across the finish line on Saturday but the first female Triathlon Ontario member and therefore earns the Provincial Championship title. Richardson’s victory consisted of a collection of three consistent performances in each legs of the dualthon for a finishing time of 2:33:40, second place on the day and the Provincial title.
Congratulations to both Scott and Christine for their victories.
