Youth Series and Triple Crown Update
July 28, 2014 – Triathlon Ontario, the recognized Provincial Governing Body of Multisport in Ontario, announced updates to its 2014 Youth Cup Series and Triple Crown Challenge.
Youth Cup Series
This past weekend, the historic Sharbot Lake KOS played host to the latest stop on the 2014 edition of the Triathlon Ontario Youth Cup Series. This was also the first of three draft legal races for the 14-15 age category, where the best four of five events count in the final tally. In the Boys 14-15 category Liam Donnelly took his second win and 25 points, extending his Series lead over Kyle Caie by 10 points who had another second place finish. Nathan Gurrin-Smith moved into third place overall with his solid third place finish at Sharbot Lake.
Sara Borrens extended her Series lead in the Girls 14-15 category over Emilie Tremblay and Ella Kubas by seven points with a second place finish. In her first event of the Series, Erika Rankin took the win and 25 points. Helena Theban and Hannah Hall are staying close with 31 points apiece.
Ian Young used a 1-2 finish in the first two events of the year in the Boys 12-13 category (best three out of four events) to take a six point Series lead over Liam Yoell who sits at 39 points after two events. Mac Vibert sits in third, just four points behind with 35 points. Tristen Jones, took the win on the day in his first event, followed by Young and Yoell.
Not to be outdone by her brother, Emma Young won her second event in the Girls 12-13 category to take a commanding 13 point lead over her nearest rivals Emma Lazenby and Isabella Mastroianni. Young sits at the maximum 50 points after two events while Lazenby and Mastroianni sit at 37 points and Maxine Beland used a solid third place finish to stay close at 36 points.
Next up on the circuit for the 14-15 Boys and Girls category will be this weekend in Ottawa, at the Draft Legal Provincial Championships where the points are worth ~25% more. The Boys and Girls 12-13 category will be taking a break and rejoining the Series at the Dunrobin KOS on August 24th.

Triple Crown Challenge
With the recent National Championships being held in Magog, Quebec, Triathlon Ontario’s inaugural Triple Crown Challenge took another step closer to finding out who will win the $500 cash prize. The Triple Crown is made up of Provincials, Nationals and World’s – all being held in Canada this year.
After two of three events in the Sprint distances, there is a tight battle for first place on the women’s side. Janice Jones-Skinner and Sheri Mazzella are tied with 30 points (remember, less is better!), Ashley Aimone and Claudia Hutchinson are just one point behind at 31 points, while Emma Plater is close on their tails at 34 points.
The men are doing their part to put on a show too. Billy Bostad and John Pickard are tied for the lead at 30 points, while Ken Staples is next at 34 points and David Campbell is staying in the hunt at 36 points. Edmonton is the last stop for the Sprint distance and the World Championships are sure to be the perfect stage to decide these close races.
Magog was the first event in the Olympic or Standard distance. Kristen Marchant has drawn first blood with an age group win and 10 points, with a number of ladies hot on her heals within just four points. On the men’s side there are a whopping 12 men all within five points and five tied for first place with 10 points.
The next stop on the Olympic/Standard distance is Multisport Canada’s Bracebridge event next weekend before moving on to the WCs at the end of August. Both the men and women will be looking to put some breathing room between themselves and the rest of the field up in cottage country.
