Non-drafting Short Course Provincial Champs Crowned and Cup Series Athletes Put on a Show at TTF

July 24, 2017 – Triathlon Ontario, the recognized Provincial Governing Body of Multisport in Ontario, crowed four new Provincial Champions this weekend at the Toronto Triathlon Festival. The event was also the host of the second of three stops on both the Elite/U23 and Junior Cup Series.

“Rush Hour Redefined” aka the TTF, lived up to its billing as one of the top races in Ontario on Sunday. In addition to hosting both Sprint and Standard distance Provincial Championships and the Cup Series, the TTF also offered a sprint draft legal race for Age Groupers. As more Age Groupers get the opportunity to try draft legal racing, more and more are loving it. The next opportunity to for Age Groupers to race draft legal will be the August 12th Draft Legal Provincial Championships in Welland.

The 2017 Provincial Champions are as follows:
Standard Triathlon – Chris Van De Water and Kelley Tessier
Non-drafting Sprint Triathlon – Lee Rantala and Sayaka Tiessen

Cup Series
?One of the most exciting races on Sunday was the Elite/U23 men’s race. Myles Zagar came out of the 750m swim with a sizable advantage but was caught on the bike by a four man chase pack that included Michael Lori, Taylor Forbes, Mathew Wright (Barbados) and Patrick Smith. The five man pack came into T2 together and then it was foot race for the win. Lori and Forbes broke away and ran side by side right until the finish line where Lori edged current training partner Forbes, in a photo finish.

In the Junior division, racing with the Elites/U23, a pack formed about 30 seconds back from the lead. Once on the run, Liam Donnelly was able to put some space between himself and fellow juniors Antoine Poirier (Quebec) Justin De Jong to take the win.

In the women’s race there was a three women pack heading out of T1 that included Samantha Klus, Elise Bolger and junior Cassandra Dalbec. Once off the bike Klus put down the fastest run split among the women to take the win. Danae Morris used the fastest bike split and a strong run to claim second on the day while Maddy Kennedy rounded out the podium in the Elite/U23 division.

Dalbec demonstrated that she is heading into next week’s Canada Summer Games in fine form by claiming the junior division win on Sunday. Rounding out the junior women’s podium was CSG teammate Ella Kubas in second and Ottawa’s Kaitlyn Jones in third.

The two Series move to their final stop on August 12th in Welland at Provincial Championships where additional points will be up for grabs. With all of the outcomes still in the air, it will make for an exciting morning of racing indeed.
