July 24, 2017Triathlon Ontario, the recognized Provincial Governing Body of Multisport in Ontario, crowed four new Provincial Champions this weekend at the Toronto Triathlon Festival. The event was also the host of the second of three stops on both the Elite/U23 and Junior Cup Series.

“Rush Hour Redefined” aka the TTF, lived up to its billing as one of the top races in Ontario on Sunday. In addition to hosting both Sprint and Standard distance Provincial Championships and the Cup Series, the TTF also offered a sprint draft legal race for Age Groupers. As more Age Groupers get the opportunity to try draft legal racing, more and more are loving it. The next opportunity to for Age Groupers to race draft legal will be the August 12th Draft Legal Provincial Championships in Welland.

The 2017 Provincial Champions are as follows:
Standard Triathlon – Chris Van De Water and Kelley Tessier
Non-drafting Sprint Triathlon – Lee Rantala and Sayaka Tiessen
Congratulations!

Cup Series
?One of the most exciting races on Sunday was the Elite/U23 men’s race. Myles Zagar came out of the 750m swim with a sizable advantage but was caught on the bike by a four man chase pack that included Michael Lori, Taylor Forbes, Mathew Wright (Barbados) and Patrick Smith. The five man pack came into T2 together and then it was foot race for the win. Lori and Forbes broke away and ran side by side right until the finish line where Lori edged current training partner Forbes, in a photo finish.

In the Junior division, racing with the Elites/U23, a pack formed about 30 seconds back from the lead. Once on the run, Liam Donnelly was able to put some space between himself and fellow juniors Antoine Poirier (Quebec) Justin De Jong to take the win.

In the women’s race there was a three women pack heading out of T1 that included Samantha Klus, Elise Bolger and junior Cassandra Dalbec. Once off the bike Klus put down the fastest run split among the women to take the win. Danae Morris used the fastest bike split and a strong run to claim second on the day while Maddy Kennedy rounded out the podium in the Elite/U23 division.

Dalbec demonstrated that she is heading into next week’s Canada Summer Games in fine form by claiming the junior division win on Sunday. Rounding out the junior women’s podium was CSG teammate Ella Kubas in second and Ottawa’s Kaitlyn Jones in third.

Full Elite/U23 standings can be found here.
Full Junior standings can be found here.

The two Series move to their final stop on August 12th in Welland at Provincial Championships where additional points will be up for grabs. With all of the outcomes still in the air, it will make for an exciting morning of racing indeed.

– Bergman, Mackenzie, Mastroianni & Chant all Series leaders –

?July 18, 2017Triathlon Ontario’s second stop in the five-race Youth Cup Series was this past Sunday’s Stittsville KOS. The 14-15 age division got a chance to experience a new format, the grand prix. The race also served as an Ontario Summer Games qualifier, with three spots available for next year’s Games in London.

The grand prix format consisted of three short and fast races, points were awarded by finishing position and after three races, the one with the lowest point total was the winner. The 12-13 age division raced in a traditional youth triathlon format.

In the girl’s 12-13 age group, Astrid Bergman took the win and held her spot on top of the Series standings, while on the boy’s side, Ian Mackenzie made it back-to-back victories to earn maximum Series points so far.

In the 14-15 age group, Sudbury’s Isabella Mastroianni finished first in all three heats to earn the lowest point total and claim victory, giving her a nine point Series lead after two events. In the boy’s race, Jacob Chant followed up last month’s second place in Ottawa with a victory to take the Series lead by eight points.

The Youth Cup moves to Canada’s most southernly race, the Tecumseh Triathlon on July 30th. Check our website for complete Series standings and OSG qualifications so far.

The grand prix format is fast and fun and helps develop speed, tactics and recovery. Both nationally and provincially, development programs are putting a greater emphasis on short and fast racing. The super sprint distance is usually the same distance as the relay distance and is becoming a growing importance in the high performance pathway in triathlon. For example, the relay is now an Olympic discipline and is a staple in the Commonwealth Games, super sprint/qualification heats were used in the 2017 National Championships, relays make up 3/5ths of the Canada Summer Games format and mixed relay became an official medal discipline in last year’s Ontario Summer Games.

– 3 OSG qualifying spots up for grabs –

?July 11, 2017Triathlon Ontario’s next stop in the five-race Youth Cup Series is this weekend’s Stittsville KOS. For the 14-15 age group, this is the most unique and possibly the most exciting, racing format on the Cup Series this year.
The 12-13 age group will race in a traditional youth triathlon format. The 14-15 age group, however, will race in three heats throughout the day, tallying points for finishing position in each heat. The one with the most points at the end of the day will win. The distance of the heats consist of a 200m swim, 6 km draft legal bike, 1 km run.

Three qualification spots for next year’s Ontario Summer Games will also be available for the top three male and female 14-15 year olds that have not previously qualified.

Good luck to all!
