Draft Legal Provincial Championships Are Upon Us

August 27th is the new date for Triathlon Ontario’s signature race, the Draft Legal Provincial Championships. Not only is the date new, but so is the venue. The new venue is the International Flatwater Centre in Welland.

The races include U15, Junior and Elite/U23 and for the first time ever, Age Groupers can compete in a capped open wave.

Here are some important pieces of information about the race.

-Registration closes Thursday at 6pm August 25th – no race day registrations
-Must be a current Triathlon Ontario member
-Mandatory race briefing and kit pick up on site Friday, August 26th 6pm
-There is a swim cut off of 20 min and a swim/bike cutoff of 60 min for Age Groupers
-For Age Groupers, Juniors and Elite/U23 races the lap out rule will be in effect (2 laps 10km course)
-ITU Age Group drafting legal bike equipment rules in effect – no aero bars, no disk wheels or disk brakes and only traditional road bikes allowed.

The response from Age Groupers who have raced draft legal races so far this year has been overwhelmingly positive. This is another opportunity for those that loved racing in Ottawa, want to prepare for Worlds, or for those that missed Ottawa and want to give this fast and exciting style of racing a chance.

Read more about the Age Group Division or Register here.

 Ontario Summer Games Preview

Preparations are nearly complete for what is anticipated to be the best Ontario Summer Games yet. 48 of the fastest 15-16 year olds in the province are set to to due battle on August 12th and 13th at Jack Darling Memorial Park in Mississauga.

Everyone is invited to come cheer on some exciting racing and support our next up and coming group of elite athletes. Admission is free and the venue is spectator and family friendly. The individual race goes off on Friday at 10am and perhaps the most exciting event in all of multisport, the mixed relay, goes off on Saturday at 8am.

Cup Series Standings

The stage is now set for an epic showdown after three of four events in the Elite/U23 and Junior Cup Series. Heading into the final race (Provincials) Abby Miller and Danae Morris sit one point apart in the standings. On the men’s side five athletes are within six points of each other with Provincials being the determining factor as to who gets the title and the first place cash prize.

In the Junior Series, the women’s standings show another nail bitter as six women are within eight points of each other and on the men’s side, Dylan Pust has a more comfortable seven point lead over second place Liam Donnelly.

The 14-15 division of the Youth Cup Series will be taking a break as many of the athletes are in the OSG but will return for the U15 race at Provincials. Provincials is the third of four races and will play a pivotal role as additional points are up for grabs.

The 12-13 Division of the Youth Cup heads to Peterborough this weekend at the Chemong Lake race. This will be the third of five races in that series. Good luck to everyone competing this weekend.

Ontario’s Andrew Yorke is Rio Bound!

Is there a better way to have celebrated Canada Day last week than with the announcement of the team that will represent us in Rio at the Olympics in August? Even better, Ontario’s own Andrew Yorke has been named as one of two male representatives. Congratulations to Andrew from all of us in Ontario. We are all very proud and will be cheering him on next month.

How Your Membership Dollars are Supporting our Olympians

As we gear up for the Rio Olympics, you may be wondering how can you support or if you are already supporting our athletes. The best way you can provide direct or indirect support to our High Performance athletes is by becoming a 2016 Triathlon Ontario member. You may not have known but $5 (for 16+, $3 for 15 and under) of every membership goes directly to Triathlon Canada, which goes towards supporting our Canadian HP athletes.

Additionally, approximately $7 per member goes towards funding the High Performance Centre in Guelph. Guelph is where some of the top Elites in Canada train under Coach Craig Taylor such as current Olympians Andrew Yorke, Amelie Kretz (trained at Guelph 2013-15) and Jason Wilson of Barbados (self supported). Others currently at Guelph include 2015 National Champion Taylor Forbes, 2015 Pan Am Games team member Joanna Brown, and rising star Dominka Jamnicky, to name a few. The program is jointly funded by Triathlon Ontario, Triathlon Canada and the Canadian Sport Institute Ontario.

We can’t forget about the next generation of athletes. Your membership dollars also go towards supporting the Quest for Gold Ontario Athlete Assistance Program. The Program is jointly administered and funded by Triathlon Ontario and the Ontario Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport. The program provides $50,000 of funding for 10 para and non-para Provincial carded athletes.

Triathlon Ontario’s Provincial Development Team is another source of young talent. The Program is just three years old and is funded through self support via the athletes and a budget from Triathlon Ontario through membership funds. Some of the former team members include the Forbes twins, now training in Guelph and Oliver Blecher, current North American Junior Champion. Read more about the current Team here.

Once again, thanks for your support!

Disk brakes are permitted on mountain bikes, whether that be for Cross Triathlon/Duathlon or if someone were to compete in a road triathlon/duathlon on a mountain bike. If there are any further questions please contact the Triathlon Ontario office.

The Passing of an Ontario Triathlon Icon

Our sport and community lost a legendary icon last week with the passing of Terry McKinty. For those of you not familiar with Terry, he was the founder of the Ottawa region’s Somersault Series. I had the distinct honour to get to know Terry over the past two and a half years but if you even met Terry for five minutes, you felt like you knew him for 10 years. Terry was warm, genuine and passionate. You would never have finished a conversation with him without smiling.

His impact on the sport and people in general is staggering and his legacy will be felt long after he is gone. He positively impacted thousands of people’s lives and inspired them to get off the couch and live healthier and more active lives.

He intentionally or unintentionally mentored so many in the sport, myself included.

Terry will be missed but not forgotten.

Terry’s family and the Somersault crew invite all of you to send them a fond memory, an anecdote or a conversation you may have had with Terry over the years (see details in the Terry Tribute details at: (www.somersault.ca/terrytribute.html). A celebration of Terry’s life will be held at the RA Centre anytime between noon and 5pm on Saturday March 12th for an informal gathering in celebration. All are welcome.

Sincerely,
Phil Dale
Executive Director, Triathlon Ontario
