– Three day camp featuring Olympic Gold Medalist Glenroy Gilbert –

December 13, 2016Triathlon Ontario, the recognized Provincial Governing Body of Multisport in Ontario, released its 2017 Canada Summer Games qualification criteria and opened registration for its three day Youth and Junior Provincial Development camp featuring Olympic Gold Medalist and Canadian National track coach, Glenroy Gilbert.

Provincial Development Camp
Triathlon Ontario is offering both Provincial Team and non-Provincial Team athletes an opportunity to train together in Ottawa from December 28th – 30th.

This is a general fitness camp with 7 hours of swimming with a run skills session with Olympic Gold Medalist, Glenroy Gilbert. The work with Gilbert, the current Canadian Olympic sprint and relay coach, will focus on top end speed drills and information you can bring into your run strength and technical training at home.

There will also be 4-5 hours of bike training including 1-2 sessions of swim/bike brick workouts.

Canada Summer Games Criteria
The primary objective of Triathlon Ontario is to develop a team in both genders that will maximize total podium performance. Triathlon Ontario will strive to build a team that will be competitive across all events (Individual, gender relays and mixed relay).

The selection process for the 2017 Canada Summer Games will be a multi-step process. The first step is to submit a Declaration of Intent to Qualify as a Team member. The due date for step one is January 20, 2017 – no exceptions. Only athletes who have submitted a Declaration of Intent before the deadline will be identified as CSG talent pool athletes and will be eligible for consideration.

The second step will consist of a series of mandatory testing and assessments as well as race performance evaluations. Athletes must participate in all testing and assessment processes.

Race Qualification
Athletes can qualify directly under the following race performances provided they comply with all requirements as it pertains to participation in camps and other CSG activities:

1) One spot per gender will be allocated to any eligible Ontario athlete who finishes in the top three at the 2017 CAMTRI Junior North American Championships on March 11, 2017 in Sarasota, Florida provided the athlete complies with all requirements as it pertains to participation in camps and other CSG activities

2) Subject to availability, two spots per gender will be allocated to any eligible Ontario athlete who finishes in the top twelve in the Class A Finals June 18, 2017 at the Ottawa International Triathlon CAMTRI Premium Continental Cup.

Final Team Selection
The final team selection will include four males and four females (3 team members + 1 alternate* for each gender). Team members will be selected through observation and analysis of a combination of:
• Race performance
• Training process
• Testing and evaluations

– Start 2017 off by skating, cross country skiing and running in the nation’s capital during Canada’s 150th year –

December 7, 2016 Triathlon Ontario, the recognized Provincial Governing Body of Multisport in Ontario, announced its first ever Winter Provincial Championship to be held in Ottawa on February 4th at the Winterlude Triathlon.

The first Provincial Championship of the year will feature a truly unique event. This great event is one of the oldest Winterlude activities and exemplifies what winter in the Nation’s Capital is all about – skating 8 km on the Rideau Canal, coupled with an 8 km cross-country ski and a 5km run. Be sure to register before midnight on January 10th to beat the first early bird price increase.

-Triathlon Ontario Welcomes Four New Board of Directors at Weekend AGM-

December 5, 2016Triathlon Ontario, the recognized Provincial Governing Body of Multisport in Ontario, announced the results of its Annual General Meeting, held prior to its Annual Awards celebration over the weekend.

Four new directors were elected to replace four outgoing directors. Triathlon Ontario would like to welcome Ming-Chang Tsai, Irene Rey, Gail Cameron and Petrina Dolby to the board and say thank you to Mike Greenberg, Jen Amaral, Mike Breech and Damon Winey for their years of service to the Triathlon Ontario board and to the sport.

The new board members bring a variety of professional experiences such as sport science, human resources, risk management and strategic consulting as well as a wealth of personal and triathlon-specific experience to the board.

Thank you to all those that attended a fantastic night of celebration on Saturday night and a very special thank you to key note speaker Monique Sullivan who shared a very candid and inspirational talk about her Olympic journey and experiences.

Long Course Development Team
Triathlon Ontario also announced the composition of its first ever Long Course Development Team. Three men qualified for the 2017 team, which provides financial and promotional support to the next generation of long course Ontario professionals. Congratulations to Jordan Monnink, Alex Vanderlinden and Adam Doxtator.

November 8, 2016Triathlon Ontario, the recognized Provincial Governing Body of Multisport in Ontario, announced today registration is open for its optional Canada Summer Games Provincial Development Training Camp.

Triathlon Ontario is hosting a Provincial Development Training Camp on November 26th and 27th in Ottawa. The camp is geared towards Canada Summer Games athletes and as such, those junior aged athletes (16-19 as of December 31, 2017) will be given registration preference. Attendance is not mandatory for those interested in qualifying. It is an opportunity for athletes to train together and further develop their skill sets.

The schedule of the camp will be as follows:

Saturday
9:30 – 10:30 Swim session
11:00 – 12:30 Bike session
12:30 – 2:00 Lunch and Canada Summer Games Information Seminar
2:00 – 3:00 Run session
3:00 – 4:30 Swim session
4:30 – 5:30 Nutrition recovery station and seminar
(All Saturday events at Nepean Sportsplex)

Sunday
9:30 – 12:00 Rotating stations – Bike power profiling, run and strength stations (PEAK Centre)
1:00 -2:30 Swim session (Nepean Sportsplex)

Athletes will be required to bring their own food and snacks and their bikes and other relevant equipment. Spots are limited to 24. The price of the camp is $65.

Learn from Olympic level coaches and experts –

November 2, 2016Triathlon Ontario, the recognized Provincial Governing Body of Multisport in Ontario, announced it has once again partnered with the Canadian Sport Institute Ontario (CSIO) to offer a world class Open Water Swim Clinic specifically designed for Age Groupers on November 27th.

This clinic offers the rare opportunity to experience the multi-million dollar Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre while working with CSIO’s Olympic level swim coach, biomechanist, strength and conditioning expert and Olympic Open Water swimmer Zsofi Balazs.

The morning begins at 6:00 am with the first of two in water swim sessions, focusing on freestyle stroke mechanics, open water swimming techniques and bio-mechanical feedback. Athletes will then move to the class room for a discussion on technique, open water swimming and training. Its then off to do some dry land training with CSIO’s Strength and Conditioning expert before heading back in the pool for the second in water session for further technique and bio-mechanical feedback. The day will wrap up around 12:30pm.

As part of the registration package athletes will be receiving a pair of Vorgee Missile googles, complimentary Infinit Nutrition Jet Fuel throughout the day, and a Triathlon Ontario water bottle and silicon swim cap.

– Canadian track cycling star Monique Sullivan a 2-time Olympian and 3-time 2015 Pan Am gold medalist to be evening’s featured guest speaker –

Triathlon Ontario is also proud to announce that the featured guest speaker will be Monique Sullvian.

Sullivan is a 2-time Olympian (London and Rio) and 3-time 2015 Pan Am Gold medalist in track cycling. She will speak about her 15-year career in track cycling and how she has come to peace with what initially felt as failure in Rio. She will also share her experience in the betting sport of Japanese Keirin racing where she competed for six weeks following Rio.

October 18, 2016 Triathlon Ontario, the recognized Provincial Governing Body of Multisport in Ontario, announced members can now go online and nominate an athlete, coach, official or volunteer for an annual award to be received at the Annual Awards Celebration on December 3rd, 2016 at McMaster University.

Triathlon Ontario will be celebrating its Provincial Champions, Cup Series and Award winners over dinner with a special guest speaker. Details of the day and evening festivities are currently being finalized and will be announced shortly. In the meantime individuals can submit nominations for athlete or non-athlete awards until November 10th, 2016.

October 17, 2016Triathlon Ontario, the recognized Provincial Governing Body of Multisport in Ontario, announced that the application for those athletes wishing to apply for the Long Course Developmental Team is now available until November 1st.

In January, Triathlon Ontario announced that it had created an initiative to provide both financial and promotional support to up to three long course professionals of each gender who meet a stated criteria.

Three of Canada’s top professional long course professionals and Ontario natives, Cody Beals, Taylor Reid and Lionel Sanders were instrumental in helping to develop the criteria, providing invaluable feedback and input during the process.

The objective of the initiative is to provide increased exposure and financial support to the Province’s developing long course athletes, helping to bridge the gap from new professional with little or no sponsorship, to well established professionals in a better position to succeed on and off the race course.

Athletes that are interested in being named to the Triathlon Ontario Long Course Development Team must meet the following criteria:

  • Must have Triathlon Ontario designated Elite status in Long Course racing
  • At least one podium (top three) overall finish in a Triathlon Ontario sanctioned long course race in the year of qualification
  • Must be under 30 years of age as of December 31st of the funding year
  • Must earn one of the following results – Within 8% of the overall winning time in athlete’s gender at one of the following events:
    • P-500 or greater ranked IRONMAN 70.3 event, or
    • P-2000 or greater ranked IRONMAN event or
    • Challenge Family event
