ITU Worlds Report

Chicago played host to this year’s edition of the ITU World Championships for Age Groupers, Juniors, U23, Para triathlon and Elites.
Ontario was well represented in the 520 person Age Group Team that raced for Canada. Congratulations to those that medaled, had PBs or just had a fantastic time pulling on the maple leaf!

On the High Performance side, Ontario had a number of athletes racing. Part of your membership dollars go toward supporting our national athletes either through a portion going to pay for Triathlon Canada affiliation fees, the National Training Centre in Guelph, Quest for Gold Athlete Assistance Program, or the Provincial Development Team.

Those athletes competing on the World’s stage from Ontario supported by your membership dollars included Kyle Jones, Andrew Yorke, and Amelie Kretz on the Elite side. At the U23 level we had Taylor and Austen Forbes, Dominika Jamnicky and Joanna Brown. Rounding out the Junior division was Oliver Blecher.

Our best result came from NTC Guelph and QFG athlete Dominika Jamnicky, finishing 12th in her shortened race. Jamnicky, who will be racing in Mexico in her final World Cup of the year, also had a 15th place finish in Edmonton in her first WTS race competing as an Elite just prior to Chicago.

Graduated Provincial Team member and now NTCer and QFG athlete, Taylor Forbes, had a solid 17th placing at Worlds as our best male result at Worlds.

On the Para side, Ottawa’s Christine Robbins and her guide, former QFG athlete Sasha Bolton, finished 8th in the women’s PT5 class as they continue their quest for Rio 2016 qualification.

Club Championships

LPC Defends its Crown in Division I While Fighting Koalas Takes its First Division II Title

Numbers were strong in Wasaga Beach despite numerous club members choosing to rack up valuable points at the province’s first full IRONMAN event, a significant part of Triathlon Ontario’s Long Course Series and a number of juniors competing in the Junior Cup Series finale at Dunrobin.

In total, 177 athletes scored points for their 25 clubs in attendance over the weekend.  After three to four years of terrible weather, an event move date earlier in the calender helped to ensure ideal racing conditions this year.  The new date, along with hosting the Club Championships helped the Wasaga event experience a 24% increase in participation from the previous year, according to Sportstats.

Division I
LPC Triathlon Club – 2,250 points
Toronto Triathlon Club – 1,810 points
Balance Point Triathlon – Club 1,080 points

Division II
The Fighting Koalas – 960 points
Mettle Multisport – 680 points
C3 – 420 points

Long Course Series to Wrap Up In Niagara

Four of the five races included in this year’s inaugural Triathlon Ontario Long Course Series are now in the books.  Many took the opportunity last week to score 1.5x the value of points at the first ever full IRONMAN in Muskoka.

So far the Series boasts nearly 300 participants that have scored points by coming in the top 20 of their age group.  The Series now moves to the Niagara Barrelman this month in the last opportunity to score points and have your name etched on the trophy.

Series standings are updated and its all going to come down to the last day.  In the Women’s Age Group Division Aimee Sutton leads with 1,054 points.  In the Women’s Masters Division Lia Kutzscher leads a tight race with 1,088 points.  Over on the men’s side we have a tie for first place currently with Josh Loveless and Scott Dickie both at 1,054 points.  In the Men’s Masters Division Tim Lichy leads with 1,063.  Who will hold on to win or will someone race Niagara and score max points to come from behind?  We’re all holding our breath to see!!!!

Donnelly and Bolger Take the Inaugural Junior Cup Series

Dunrobin (Ottawa) was the site for the fourth and final stop on the first ever Junior Cup Series.

Danae Morris took the win on the day but a second place finish was good enough for Elise Bolger to edge out Morris for the Series Championship.  Meghan Adams, coming off an impressive win at Quebec Provincials recently, took third place on the day.  Erika Rankin who was fourth on the day used three previous stellar results in the Series to tie Morris for 2nd place overall in the Series.

First year junior Liam Donnelly won his second event in the Series at Dunrobin, which gave him the overall Series win.  Second and third on the day were Ryan Rudderham and Daniel Westbroek.  Rudderham’s strong placing helped propel him up the Series points table to finish second overall and third place in the final standings went to James Cooke, who finished just off the podium in Dunrobin in fourth place.

Congrats to all those that helped make the first Junior Cup a success.  In all, 30 Juniors took part in the Series, which often had conflicting scheduling with National Series races.

Congrats to Liam and Elise and see everyone next year!

 Youth Cup and OSG Qualifiers

Both Youth Cup age groups were in action this past weekend at Dunrobin.  Emma Lazenby took her second win of the Series in the 12-13 category, which gave her a 10 point lead heading into the last event.  Second and third on the day were Madeline Ongena and Madison Walsh.  In the overall standings, Isabella Mastroianni sits in second and Walsh in third.

In the 12-13 Division the podiums for the first three races of the season have been identical.  James Olson-Keating earned his third victory out of three attempts and therefore locks up the Series victory with maximum points!  Ian Young and Hunter Scholey both got their third straight second and third places and therefore that is how the overall standing sit.

In the 14-15 category, Haley Sturrock earned her second win in the Series.  Second and third on the day went to Emma Young and Ella Kubas.  Young’s consistent performance has her sitting in first place currently, with Kubas in second and Tara Black in third.

On the boys side, Tristen Jones won the Dunrobin race, his second of the Series which moved him up to third place overall.  Brayden Scholey came in second, good enough to take first place overall.  Jack Chambers rounded out the podium in Ottawa.  Justin De Jong sits just three points back of Scholey in second place in the Series.

For updated standings click here

Another nine athletes qualified for the 2016 Ontario Summer Games at Dunrobin.  So far 39 athletes have qualified representing seven different youth clubs.  The Games will be held in Mississauga August 11-14 next year.  Lakeside represents another opportunity to qualify with three spots for both males and females available.

?Ontario’s Long Course Elite Athletes

In case you haven’t heard, Ontario is producing a number of new and young talent on the international long course scene and the world is taking notice.  Three athletes in particular are well on their way to establishing themselves as a force to be reckoned with.

Since we last checked in with you, Lionel Sanders won the IRONMAN 70.3 Mont Tremblant a couple of weeks ago.  This was after a rough go of it at IRONMAN Texas, where despite losing 10% of his body weight during the race Lionel was still able to pull of a fourth place finish while other pros were dropping out of the race left, right and centre.

In case you missed it, Lionel was featured in a story on Canada Day in USA Today.

Cody Beals picked up his first professional long course win recently at IRONMAN 70.3 Eagleman.  Cody followed up the victory with a 6th place at IRONMAN 70.3 Mont Tremblant.  Cody took a gamble on the bike which didn’t pay off but he was still able to hold on to 6th.

Former Quest for Gold athlete Taylor Reid picked up his first second place at IRONMAN 70.3 Mont Tremblant behind his old training partner Lionel Sanders.  This is the best result in Taylor young professional career.

LPC Hydration & Fueling Analysis

Are you planning to do a Half or Full Iron-distance triathlon this season? Unsure of your hydration & fueling needs for race day? Coach Mark Linseman of Loaring Personal Coaching has helped hundreds of triathletes from beginner to professional to create, modify and execute their hydration & fueling plan to help reach their goals. Coach Mark recently worked with Lionel Sanders to assess his hydration and fueling needs for IRONMAN racing. You can read Lionel’s blog here.

The analysis involves a bike and/or run at estimated goal race intensity. You’ll find out how well you hydrate before exercise, how much you sweat during exercise, whether you are a low-sodium or high-sodium sweater, and how much carbohydrate to take in depending on your race distance, goals and previous experience. Most of all, you will learn how to take control of YOUR hydration and fueling and develop the confidence and experience to be able to adapt to any race-day situation.

Coach Mark will create a personalized Hydration & Fueling Worksheet that you can use during your key training sessions in order to fine-tune your strategy for race day. Everyone is different so what works for one person does not work for all.

Find out more and register online for a session.  By appointment only. Inquire about group discounts. Triathlon Ontario members may apply discount code TriON to receive 20% off.

Attention all 2014 members!  Your membership has now expired so its time to renew.  In addition to all of the great benefits of memberships like insurance coverage, magazine subscription, great discounts on races, products and services and inclusion in various provincial series part of your membership dollars go towards supporting the growth of and development of the sport.  For example, did you know that through Triathlon Ontario sponsored programs such as the NTC Guelph, Quest for Gold Athlete Assistance and the Provincial Development Team, 25 of Canada’s top triathletes at the Elite, U23 and Jr level receive support to help achieve their dreams?  Not everyone may reach the podium at upcoming Olympics but none will without your support.  Check out the review under the Elite/U23/Jr news to check out how our athletes are doing!

A big thank you to the 1,700+ members that have renewed so far for the 2015 season and those of you that have made donations.  We are a non-profit organization and in an environment where funding is being cut from outside sources every dollar counts.

You can easily renew or sign up for a new membership by clicking here.

Ontario Triathletes Accomplish Unprecedented Historic Triumph
– Opening of the Joe Finley Centre for Cancer Research at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre –

Joe’s Team Triathlon is not the only triathlon with fund-raising as its primary purpose, however it certainly has been the most successful.  It took eight short years for this charitable race to raise more than $10 million for critical cancer research and a world-class cancer research centre at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre.  Joe’s Team attracts a wide range of diverse triathletes, from the veteran to those looking to complete their first sprint distance.  Triathletes must raise a minimum of $500 each ($250 if 21 years old or under) which enables them to participate in the race category of choice.
The goal for 2015 is supporting the internationally recognized researchers and clinicians now based at the Centre.  If you want to participate as an individual in the triathlon or duathlon, or join a relay team, you can register at www.joesteam.ca.
